About UC Merced

UC Merced is the first new American research university in the 21st century, with a mission of research, teaching and service. Opening on September 5, 2005, UC Merced is the first new UC campus built since 1965. It was authorized by the California Legislature in 1988 to address the higher-education needs of the state's fastest-growing region — the Central Valley, with a population of 6.5 million residents — and increase access to the UC system for the state's top achievers.

Located in Merced, CA, in the middle of the San Joaquin Valley, the campus is within a two-hour drive from the cities of San Francisco and Sacramento, and from the natural beauty of the Pacific Ocean and Yosemite National Park. Merced enjoys a low cost of living and an excellent quality of life. The average resident commutes 15 minutes one way to work.
